A person is allowed to drive a vehicle in Latvia, if he or she has:
· a driving license issued in a member state of the European Economic Area and in the Swiss Confederacy;
· a driving license issued by a Member State of the European Union or by a member state of the European Free Trade Association;
· a driving license, where the driver categories specified in the 1968 Convention on Road Traffic are indicated; http://live.unece.org/trans/conventn/legalinst_08_RTRSS_RT1968.html or
· a driving license, where the driver categories specified in the 1968 Convention on Road Traffic are not indicated. With such a driving license a person is only permitted to drive vehicles conforming to the B category if in the issuing state such a driving license gives the right to drive the automobile. If in the driving license there has not be made a record with Latin alphabet letters, the person shall present a notarial certified translation in Latvian
NB! US, CA, AU citizens! - An International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory when driving to Estonia or Lithuania and allows an individual to drive a motor vehicle in other EU countries when accompanied by a valid license.
In Latvia there is no need for International Driving Permits (IDP) if the class of your license matches the classification defined in the 1968 Convention of Road Traffic (group "B").
